The Salomon X Ultra Mid 3 GTX Hiking Boots are a perfect boot for hikers and trekkers as they provide the comfort and stability of a typical hiking boot while letting you feel light and athletic on the trail.

Salomon is a brand that we have come to love with their superior traction, durability and comfort. With the Salomon X Ultra Mid 3 GTX being built in the same Advanced Chassis as other Salomon boots, the X Ultra Mid 3 wraps nicely around your foot and ankle. Moreover,   the fit ensures padded comfort, all while delivering additional support in a mid-cut boot. The X Ultra Mid 3 does a good job finding a balance between being lightweight and durable. Whereas, when other boots are just too burly and bulky for your hike, you can feel good knowing you can wear the X Ultra.

Salomon X Ultra Mid 3 GTX Hiking Boots make hiking easy, with superior traction and comfort.

The Salomon X Ultra Mid 3 GTX Hiking Boots do an exceptional job with finding a way to balance comfort, durability, waterproofing and stability. The Salomon is a boot that can withstand almost any type of trail thrown at it. From muddy slopes, to technical trails with rocky terrain, the boot is able to keep you hiking.

These hiking boots are lightweight and make you feel athletic on the trail. With its lightweight frame the boot provides a surprising amount of comfort to any type of foot. Although the toe box may run narrow for some people with wide feet, the rest of the hiking boot does a great job of fitting nice and snug along the entire foot. If you do have wide feet, do consider looking into the Salomon wide size for maximum comfort.

The boot’s midsole is well padded and provides ample protection from any jagged rocks or rough terrain you may encounter on your adventure. While the midsole and sole do a great job withstanding shock below, the Salomon X ultra 3 mid does ride a littler lower on the foot and ankle compared to other hiking boots. Therefore, if you do suffer from ankle issues, or role your ankle frequently, you may consider a different boot, or to wear ankle braces.

Even though the boot rides lower on the foot, we have found that it still does a great job protecting against ankle injuries because of its lightweight frame and stability.

it still provides great support to the ankles, and helps prevent ankle turnovers. The boots can also be tightened up pretty securely around your flat feet and ankles, as there is plenty of cushion in the tongue sole and tongue. Meaning you don’t need to sacrifice any comfort for stability.

The boot tread and traction that it provides makes the Salomon’s X Ultra 3 Mid GTX a well rounded selection for almost any type of hiker and trail. Whereas, you will comfortably be able to handle any terrain that has rocky slopes, fresh snow, and even trekking through mud and puddles with ease. The lugs on the tread are deep yet don’t cake up with small rocks or mud very ensuring an easy hike throughout your journey.

Finally, the X Ultra 3 Mid hiking boot comes in both waterproof and non-waterproof options. While we were hiking the Mardi Himal trek in Nepal, the waterproof version stood up well against the snow and wet terrain. The snow had little effect on the outside of the boots – the deeper snow did pour over the top of the boot. We did notice that sustained snow and moisture on the boot did lead to them getting damp and quite cold. However, if you do find your boots getting wet, you don’t need to worry to much as the boots are relatively quick drying, and should be dry by the next morning.

The Salomon X Ultra 3 Mid is a great choice for people hiking and backpacking on almost any type of trail or terrain. One thing to keep in mind is that if you are planning on trekking a more technical trail with a heavy pack you may want to consider a more burley and steady boot. Moreover, in terms of backpacking, the boot stands up well while carrying backpack loads up to around 30-35 lbs.

Why I love the Salomon X Ultra Mid 3 GTX:

Salomon’s line of footwear is well known for being a great lightweight but durable boot that withstand almost anything. Personally, I have used these boots both for hiking in Nepal, as well as playing disc golf back in Oregon, and they have always done well with keeping my feet dry and comfortable. Additionally, as I wrote in my article ‘3 best boots for people with flat feet‘ these have done wonders with keeping my flat feet happy.

I absolutely love the flexibility of these boots, as well as the support and cushion it provides. They do a great job on any terrain, including concrete, and done an amazing job of keeping their shape with no tears or rips. Finally, Salomon hiking boots typically come with a warranty, which goes above and beyond to protect your investment, so you can feel confident that you are making a good investment when you drop the money on these.

At USD $165, I would recommend these boots for anyone with flat feet that finds themselves as a mid-level hiker. Moreover, if you are looking to make a one time investment and purchase a boot that is going to allow you to be athletic and stay dry on the trail, these are the hiking boots for you!
